What AVID does:
Teaches students how to achieve academic and personal goals through reading, writing, inquiry, collaboration and organization. We also go on field trips and have guest speakers to enhance the learning process.
Why?
In an effort to close the achievement gap, placing the right kids in the right elective is imperative. AVID is for individuals who are seemingly “stuck” in the middle and can’t seem to get out. Here are some possible reasons kids are stuck in the middle:
- SED
- 1st generation (college graduation)
- Underrepresented
- Family issues: divorce, single family, moved
- 504/IEP
- Other
AVID students are usually the shy/quiet student who doesn’t think they are the right kid for the class. Students who take AVID may not know how to work within the academic system due to a lack of organizational skills or lack of academic confidence. AVID helps students navigate both in academic and professional skills.
Benefits of AVID:
- Small class size
- Individual and group tutoring and instruction weekly
- Hands on learning
- Organizational help
- Research skills
- College visitation
- Community outreach
- Networking skills
