Clovis North's National Honor Society Meeting for 2010-2011

Any student interested in the National Honor Society Eligibility Process for next year is invited to an informational meeting on September 14, 2010, in the library at lunch. Students who want to plan this spring and summer are encouraged to learn more to improve their chances of being inducted into Clovis North's NHS. See Ms. Bennett if you have any questions prior to the meeting.

What is the National Honor Society?

The National Honor Society is a prestigious organization that promotes appropriate recognition for high school students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership and service.  Membership is often regarded as a valid indicator that the student will succeed in life and particularly in studies at the post-secondary education level. The Honor Society member will be recognized as one who exhibits academic achievement, leadership, honorable and admirable character, as well as service demonstrating that the member is willing to use talents and skills for the improvement of society.

Membership

  • Open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
  •  Must have maintained an overall Weighted GPA of 3.5
  • In addition to GPA and academic achievement (scholarship), must be evaluated on the basis of service, leadership, and character.

Scholarship

Scholarship means a commitment to learning.  A student is willing to spend hours in reading and study, because he/she knows the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind.  This student continues to learn, as knowledge is one great element in life which leads to the highest success and can be acquired through diligence and effort.  Learning furnishes the lamp by which we read the past and the light which illuminates the future.  Each candidate has the charge to continually expand his world through the opportunities of scholarship.

Service

Service can be expressed in various ways.  In the routine of the day’s work, many opportunities arise to give help to others.  Willingness to work without monetary compensation or without recognition for the benefit of those in need is the quality we seek in our membership.  Students are committed to the idea of volunteering their time and abilities to the creation of a better tomorrow.

Leadership

Leadership should exert a wholesome influence on the school.  In taking the initiative in class and school activities, the real leader strives to train and aid others to attain the same objective.  The price of leadership is sacrifice, the willingness to yield one’s personal interests for the interest of others.  A leader has confidence in himself/herself and will go forward when others hesitate.  No matter what power and resources may exist in a country, they are ineffectual without the guidance of a wise leader.  Leadership is always needed and is thus a substantive charge to each member and candidate.

Character

Character is the force in one man that distinguishes him from others.  It gives him individuality and personality.  It is that without which no man can respect himself, nor hope to attain the respect of others.  It is this force of character that guides men through life and, once developed, grows steadily.  Character is achieved, not received.  It is the product of constant action, daily striving to make the right choice.  The problem of character is the problem of self-control.  We must be in reality what we wish to appear to others.  By demonstrating such qualities as reliability, honesty, and sincerity, we may hope to prove by example that we value character.
